Larry Kemp remembered
It is heart warming to see how many people have shown up this morning to honor Larry Kemp. Thank you all for coming, this is a wonderful community. Larry was part of this community, he was a team mate and he was a loyal friend. Many of you are here because you are cyclists as was Larry Kemp. Larry exemplified what is great about our community of cyclists; he participated with passion, with desire, and with generosity. Larry was a sponge, eager to learn everything he could about bikes, parts, riding, training, and racing, while at the same time he was willing to share whatever he knew with anyone. He also shared his opinions, openly and honestly. Larry loved this community, this was Larry's family, he was proud of his family and he loved us all. Larry would be extremely honored to see how much support his community is showing for him; he would be thrilled to know how much his family cared. Many of us are here because Larry was our teammate, a very hard working teammate. When Larry first joined our team, I think we mistook his endless enthusiasm for a desire to be in control. But after awhile we realized that he just wanted to be involved. Larry was continually working for the good of the team; he helped us all, with clothing, sponsorship, parts, tactics, travel, training, with whatever we needed. He complimented our successes, while inspiring us to be better. He challenged us all. His signature, ill timed attacks always bumped the pace up and made us work harder. He certainly challenged me. I have never worked as hard as the few times I was able to beat him up a pass in Europe. But those days were soon over. As I was getting older and slower, Larry was getting better and better. From his hard work and dedication, Larry became a very strong rider and a good racer. We will dearly miss his contributions to our team. Most important, many of us are here because Larry was our friend. Larry shared his life and experiences with us. He was upfront and honest, sort of saying, "This is who I am, and I am your friend". I will miss his friendship most of all; I will miss participating with him. I will miss riding with him on Saturdays. I will miss being dropped by him on any climb in Europe. I will miss drinking a beer with Larry, analyzing the day's ride. What gearing? What percentage the climb? How fast the descent? And all the other pertinent technical data. I didn't realize how important Larry was in my life until now. I didn't realize how much a friend Larry was until he was gone. Larry, I miss you, your family misses you.
